What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the bones. It can occur at any age but is more common in older adults, especially women. The most commonly effected bones are the ribs, hips, and bones of the wrist and spine.
Risk factors for osteoporosis
Age — around your mid 30’s, the body begins to lose bone density faster than your body can replace it.
Menopause—This occurs to women 45 to 55 years old. Due to hormonal changes, women lose bone density at a faster rate than men. However, by the time men reach the ages of 65 to 70 , women and men are usually losing bone density at the same rate.
Other risk factors:
Being a female
Being Caucasian or Asian
Family history of osteoporosis
Smoking
Low body weight
Small bone frame
What can you do to lessen your risk?
Diet— to keep bones healthy, you should include vitamin D and calcium in your diet. Our bodies need calcium to maintain strong bones and vitamin D to help absorb the calcium. Other nutrients that you should include are protein, magnesium, vitamin K , and zinc.
Exercise—studies have shown that regular exercise can help reduce the rate of bone loses and conserving the bone tissue we have. By going on walks, taking the stairs, doing resistance or weight training, all can help improve your balance and coordination which can help you prevent falls.
